The Municipal Civil Defense of Porto Alegre issued a preventive alert regarding the possibility of intense rains that could prolong the flooding already existing in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. The forecast is that rain and winds will hit the region from the early hours of Monday (27) and last until the evening.
According to the agency, the forecast is for precipitation to be between 50 and 100 millimeters per day and winds between 60 and 100 kilometers per hour (km/h), which could cause streams to overflow and slopes to slide, in addition to the risk of electricity cuts, falling tree branches and electrical discharges.

The Municipal Civil Defense also warned about the high risk of landslides, erosion processes and rolling blocks in susceptible areas tomorrow (27). According to the municipal body, landslides, slope failures and barrier falls may occur. “The population residing in risk areas should observe any changes to the slopes. In case of signs of instability, residents should seek temporary shelter with relatives or friends, or use the reception structures provided by the city hall via 156”, he advised in a note.
State alert
The state had a weekend of respite from heavy rains. According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), the state remained in the yellow zone this Sunday, of potential risk. This Monday, however, the forecast is for rain since the morning. The temperature should be between 9 and 16 degrees Celsius (ºC).
The coastal region and municipalities in the south of the state are in a dangerous situation. In the southern region, the forecast is for intense rain, with the risk of electricity cuts, falling tree branches, flooding and electrical discharges. In coastal regions, the warning is of intensifying winds, which could move sand dunes over buildings on the coast. The conditions should persist until the beginning of Tuesday (28).
Due to the forecast that indicates rain between the 27th and 28th of May, the Civil Defense of the state of Rio Grande do Sul has warned, since last Friday (24), to possible overflows from the flume and rapid responses from smaller rivers, arroyos and streams where the rain presents high intensity.
The advice is for anyone who lives in riverside areas or close to places with a history of flooding to look for a safe place to stay. Specific information must be consulted with the Civil Defense of each municipality. In case of emergency, call 190 (Military Brigade) and 193 (Fire Department).
Public school classes, both in state schools and in municipal networks, were suspended in the municipalities of Porto Alegre, Pelotas and Rio Grande on Monday and Tuesday. In the capital, also, according to the state government, classes in the private network were suspended.
Situation in the state
According to a balance released this Sunday (26) by the organization, Rio Grande do Sul accounts for 169 deaths caused by heavy rains and floods since the end of April. The state also records 56 people missing and another 806 people injured. [LINK: ]
After several days without rain, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul recorded, throughout last Thursday (23), prolonged and intense rainfall. As a result, streets and avenues were flooded and some neighborhoods, especially in the center-south and south of the city, which had dried out after the floods at the beginning of the month, became flooded again. The residents had to be removed from their homes.
This weekend, the state government announced that the level of Guaíba, in Porto Alegre, dropped 16 centimeters from 7pm on Friday (24th) to 6am on Saturday (25th). Until 8 am on Saturday, the measurement of 4.16 meters (m) remained. The flood level at the site is 3m.
