Saint Thomas Becket, an English Catholic religious man, was appointed archdeacon by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Tybalt, after completing his legal studies. In 1155, King Henry II appointed him royal chancellor, assuming political, diplomatic and military responsibilities. Later, he was elected Archbishop of Canterbury, dedicating his life completely to God and the Church, leading an austere and exemplary life. Disputes arose between him and the king over authority in ecclesiastical affairs, culminating in his assassination in the cathedral in 1170.
