Volkswagen increases its production capacity in China. The German carmaker has made it known that it will be able to build 1 million electric vehicles per year in the Asian country starting from 2023: the push necessary to achieve this target will be provided by the joint venture that the VW brand has created with the local Anhui Jianghuai Automobile. According to what was announced by the CEO of Volkswagen, Ralf Brandstatter, the production of the JV in the province of Anhui will be launched in 2023 and will be 300,000 electric per year.
If we add the production of this joint-venture to the one that Volkswagen guarantees thanks to two other joint-ventures shared with local manufacturers, to be precise one with FAW Group and one with SAIC Motor, the total production capacity of the German brand in the Asian country rises. to 1 million battery-powered cars per year. A vital boost for Volkswagen, which in 2021 it has failed in its goal in China to sell between 80,000 and 100,000 electric cars: registrations of battery-powered cars of the German brand in the Asian country in fact stopped at just above 70,000 units. The target in view of this 2022 is to be able to double deliveries of the 100% electric models of the ID family, but to reach it it will be necessary to overcome the obstacle represented by the shortage of microchips and semiconductors, far from behind.
“In the past our approach was to develop in Germany and locate in China – Brandstatter’s words spoken to Nikkei’s microphones and reported by Reuters – But this approach will change significantly: we will create more local resources for research and development, especially for what concerns software, to be faster and more independent. Under my supervision, Volkswagen will accelerate local development in China ”. Recall that the current CEO of the German brand is expected to take control of the brand’s Chinese operations starting from next 1st August.
