Max Verstappen took the lead in qualifying for the decisive Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Saturday afternoon and will start on pole position on Sunday. With a lap time of 1.22.109, the Dutchman was almost four-tenths faster than his rival Lewis Hamilton. The drivers are on the same level in the standings with 369.5 points prior to the last World Cup race on Sunday.
In the last training sessions leading up to the final, Hamilton drove the fastest lap times in his Mercedes. During qualifying, the roles were reversed. On the red belt, Verstappen’s Red Bull set the fastest time, followed by Hamilton. Behind the duo, Lando Norris finished in third place.
Verstappen and Hamilton are going for a different tire strategy during Sunday’s race. The Dutchman starts on the faster red tire, while Mercedes prefers to start the race with the yellow medium tires. The last race in the battle for the world title starts on Sunday at 2 p.m.
