An American gunmaker has unveiled a semi-automatic rifle aimed at children that is based on the AR-15 modela weapon used in several school mass shootings, which has sparked opposition from groups that promote the safe and regulated use of weapons.

The rifle named JR-15 has been advertised by the manufacturer WEE1 Tactical as “The first in a line of shooting platforms that will safely help adults introduce their children to shooting sports“.

The company’s website states that the rifle “plus looks, feels and operates just like mom and dad’s gun.”

The JR-15, which is just 80 centimeters long and weighs less than a kilogram, comes with 5- or 10-round 22-caliber cartridges and was released in mid-January at $389.
The original model AR-15 is a civilian version of a military-style weapon that has been used in multiple massacres in the United States.even in those perpetrated in schools.
“It’s just grotesque,” said Josh Sugarmann, executive director of the Violence Policy Center, which seeks to curb gun violence.

In the US, shootings are repetitive.
Attempts to regulate the sale and carry are frequently blocked in Congress, where the gun lobby, particularly the National Rifle Association (NRA), wields great influence.
In a 2016 report on the methods used by U.S. gunmakers to attract youth, Sugarmann charged that lighter, brighter guns are offered on the market to cater to that segment.
In 2021, Firearms killed nearly 45,000 people in the United States, including more than 1,500 minors. according to the organization Gun Violence Archive.
