A recent one study revealed that UFO sightings they are more common in one part of the United States than the other, but why remains a mystery.
A team of researchers analyzed a dataset containing 98,000 reports collected in 20 years and found that environmental factors play a significant role in the number of sightings of UFOs, or Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP).
Why are there more UFO sightings in the Western United States?
The new research, published in the journal Science Reportsexamined data collected by the National UFO Research Center to see how environmental variables such as light pollution, cloud cover, airports and military bases coincide with reports of sightings of unidentified aerial phenomena. The findings indicate that you are more likely to see an unidentified object if you live in the western United States, a finding that surprised researchers.
According to the team behind the study, there are several reasons why Western states see more UFOs. For example, open spaces and favorable year-round weather lead people to spend more time outdoors than in other states, resulting in more sightings as people look to the sky more often.
The data speaks clearly, but the mystery remains
Researchers still don’t know for sure what people are seeing in the sky, but one interesting thing that emerged was that, at the start of the analysis, the team expected to see a steady increase in UFO reports. However, this was not the case.
According to Richard Medina, a University of Utah geographer who led the study, it’s difficult to explain why there are so many more sightings in the West. Reports of UFOs peaked in 2014 with 8,000 sightings included in the database, while in the Central and Southern United States the reports remained incredibly low compared to the numerous reports in the West.
