The rescue teams found this Wednesday the body of American mountain climber Hilaree Nelsontwo days after disappearing in Nepal’s Manaslu Mountain.
“The search team that left in the morning (Wednesday) by helicopter recovered his body and returned it”Jiban Ghimire of the Shangri-La Nepal Trek, the organizers of the expedition, told AFP.
Ghimire said the body was returned to the Manaslu base camp and will be airlifted to Kathmandu.
Now, given the little information about the tragedy, Jim Morrison, a mountaineer and Nelson’s husband, decided to break his silence and recount the unfortunate day step by step.
“I did everything I could to locate her, but I was unable to descend that slopealthough I hoped to find her alive and live my life with her,” he said.

Tragedy in the Himalayas
Between 2000 and 2016, Himalayan glaciers have lost an average of 18 inches of vertical ice annually, twice as much as between 1975 and 2000.

The famous 49-year-old athlete disappeared on Monday after an accident on a ski descentafter having made the eighth highest peak in the world (8,163 meters) with his partner Jim Morrison.
He, who led the rescue operations, left on Wednesday morning aboard the helicopter to try to find her. On Monday, the helicopters could not fly over the area due to weather conditions and on Tuesday they returned empty-handed.
With a career spanning two decades, the mountaineer and mountain skier is one of the “most prolific of her generation,” according to her sponsor.
In 2012 became the first woman to summit Everest and from nearby Lhotse in 24 hours. Six years later he returned to Lhotse and made the first ski descent of this mountain, earning him the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year award.
But on this expedition to Manaslu, Nelson admitted that she did not feel “as safe” as on previous adventures.
“These last few weeks tested my endurance”he wrote Thursday on Instagram.

‘I was unable’

The ten young men set out on a 14-day expedition and only one of them returned.
“There are no words to describe my love for this woman, my life partner, my love, my best friend and my mountain climber. She has been the beacon that has illuminated my life day after day.“, said Morrison in a heartfelt letter before telling the step by step of the day
“On September 26 at 10:42 a.m., we reached the true summit of Manaslu in rough conditions. We quickly transitioned from climbing to skiing, in the cold and wind, with the plan to go around the corner (to avoid a band of rocks) and regroup with our team of Sherpas,” he said.
I skied first and after a few turns Hilaree followed me and triggered a small avalanche. She lost her footing and was swept down a narrow snowy slope to the south side (opposite the route of ascent) of the mountain, falling more than 5,000 feet.” pointed.
“I did everything I could to locate her, but I was unable to go down that slope, although I hoped to find her alive and live my life with her,” he added.
“My loss is indescribable and I am focused on her children and their next steps. Hilaree Nelson was the most inspiring person in life and now her energy will guide our collective souls. Peace to us all. Pray for her family and community, which is widely spread all over the planet. I’m devastated that I lost herMorrison concluded.
