Stephen King is undoubtedly one of the most influential writers of the twentieth and twenty -first century. His novels have been adapted to the cinema with great success, and his name is synonymous with ravage at the box office. Recently, the famous writer participated in an encounter with the British Film Institute where he revealed what, for him, the best film of all time.
This is Sorcerer (known in Spain as ‘Cursed Load’), directed by William Friedkin. This film, released in 1977, had the bad luck of coinciding with the launch of Star Wars, which condemned her to a commercial failure. However, over time he has gained recognition as one of the great works of adventure and suspense cinema. King considers her an absolute masterpiece, highlighting her way of maintaining the tension from beginning to end. But what exactly is it from?
‘William Friedkin
History deals with four men who are forced to accept an extremely dangerous assignment: transfer a cargo of nitroglycerin through the dense Amazon jungle. They should do so in old trucks, with hardly any security guarantees, facing the multiple obstacles that threaten to exploit the load at any time.
One of the points in favor of King’s choice is the mastery with which Friedkin (the director) addresses the film. Far from the very trilliant approach to Hollywood’s classic action and adventures, choose to use an almost documentary style, letting nature itself become the main antagonist.
The setting plays a key role, with an inhospitable landscape that reinforces the sensation of constant danger. The characters, played by Roy Scheider, Bruno Cremer, Francisco Rabal and Amidou, transmit the despair of those who have nothing to lose.
