The State Department spokesman notes that the Brussels proposal has “largely resolved” the main issues
The US government took a new step towards reestablishing the nuclear agreement with Iran on Wednesday by positively assessing the “final” proposal sent by the EU at the beginning of the month. After the Tehran regime gave its approval to the draft on Monday, although with some nuances, the State Department broke its silence to ensure that the Brussels proposal – mediator in the last 16 months – has “largely resolved” the main issues.
“The text that the EU has put on the table is substantially based on the agreement that has been on the table for several months,” said US State Department spokesman Ned Price, in statements collected by the Bloomberg channel. . Likewise, although he did not want to comment on the details of the proposal, he advanced that said plan is close to what Washington was looking for.
The draft, presented by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, seeks that the US and Iran can resume the 2015 nuclear pact as soon as possible after Donald Trump decided four years ago to unilaterally break the agreement and reimpose sanctions on the Islamic republic. In order to rescue the consensus and prevent Tehran from continuing to enrich uranium above the agreed levels, since April 2021 irregular and indirect negotiations have been held in Vienna between both parties.
The consensus between Washington and Tehran, in addition to injecting stability in the Middle East, would allow the regime to boost its oil exports beyond China, to former buyers in South Korea and Europe, a key issue at a time of energy crisis due to dependence of Russian gas.
