An American official said yesterday that the American army may dismantle the temporary pier installed on the Gaza coast and move it to the port of Ashdod as a preventive measure. Due to weather and sea conditions.
American media said that the US army was considering dismantling the floating dock and returning it to Israel, amid fears that strong waves might break it again, just days after the resumption of aid deliveries.
This will be the second time in a matter of weeks that the dock system has been restored to the Israeli port of Ashdod.
Earlier this month, the pier collapsed and was damaged, and had to be towed to Ashdod for repairs that took more than a week.
He was transferred to Gaza last week and resumed his operations last Saturday, but was forced to stop again due to strong sea waves on Monday and Tuesday.
To date, the pier has been used to transport thousands of tons of aid to Gaza, but the pier’s ability to operate effectively depends largely on favorable sea conditions.
Officials said yesterday that current forecasts indicate that the waters will be rough Friday and into the weekend, as sea conditions in the eastern Mediterranean will worsen as fall and winter approach.
World Food Program (WFP) dockside aid distributions were suspended for several days, and aid piled up at a beach staging area in Gaza, officials said this week.
