The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called on the Houthi group in Yemen to release “immediately and unconditionally” United Nations employees and other relief personnel detained by the group, rejecting the accusations leveled against them by the Houthis.
Volker Türk issued a statement yesterday, saying, “I categorically reject the shameful allegations against our employees, and I am deeply concerned about the conditions of their detention.”
The authorities and civil society organizations in Yemen recently revealed Houthi kidnappings against relief employees of the United Nations and international organizations, and stated that 52 UN and international agency employees, including 4 women, were kidnapped by the Houthi group, and pointed out that among those kidnapped were 18. UN employees, including two working in the office of the UN envoy.
