Although Latin restaurants have become fashionable in the center of Madrid at outrageous prices for their countrymen, where true arepas, pupusas or ceviches are eaten is in the kitchens of Carabanchel, Puente de Vallecas and some neighborhoods of Ciudad Lineal. The Latin American population in the capital now accounts for more than half of all foreigners who set up their place of residence in the city. Venezuelans have become the main nationality this year, after Spanish, ahead of Romanian, Chinese or Ecuadorian, as was the case a decade ago. 280,000 people with a passport from a Latin American country live in Madrid, according to the latest figures from the City Council. And oblivious to the nickname that the millionaires of their countries have given to the capital, the new miami, due to its strong investments in wealthy areas of the Salamanca neighborhood, the majority of the working class lives in the Latin triangle of the south and northeast. On the other side of the Manzanares river and off the M-30.
According to the data of the population registered in the capital, updated in November, but dated July 2022According to nationality — if we take into account the place of birth, there are many more, since some also have Spanish nationality — the Venezuelans, Colombians, Peruvians, Hondurans and Ecuadorians living in Madrid represent the Latin face of the city. And the numbers have not stopped growing in recent years. There are some 52,000 people from Venezuela, 11,000 more than the previous year; 45,300 from Colombia, 12,000 more than in 2021; 37,400 from Peru, which also increased by 10,000 more people in one year; 28,500 from Honduras and 21,900 from Ecuador, much less than a decade ago, when they totaled almost 80,000. A similar amount to that of Ecuadorians represent those of Paraguay and the Dominican Republic, 15,500.
Far from settling in corners of the capital according to their countries of origin, as is the case in large metropolises in the United States, such as New York or Los Angeles, in Madrid the majority of Latin Americans live in the same areas as the rest of the foreign population. The difficulties in renting an apartment, due to the exorbitant prices and the high demand, have led them mainly to the south, in Carabanchel, and southeast, Puente de Vallecas, and to the neighborhood of Pueblo Nuevo, in Ciudad Lineal, to the northeast.
Most of them coexist in these three districts, like the large pool of workers that moves towards the center of the capital every day. Without taking into account the place of origin of its inhabitants, the neighborhood with the highest number of foreigners is San Cristóbal (in Villaverde), where they represent close to 40% of the population, a similar number of foreigners to that registered in the center of Madrid . The same is not true of those who come from China, since the majority go to live in Usera, where a third of all those who live in Madrid reside.
In the Carabanchel district, the Latin American population is concentrated in the Vista Alegre and Puerta Bonita neighborhoods. There, especially, resides the largest number of Colombians, according to the Municipal Register. About 7,100 do so in this area. Although it is also the main destination for Peruvians (about 5,000), Hondurans (more than 5,600) and Ecuadorians (almost 4,000).

10 kilometers to the east, in Puente de Vallecas, the majority of Venezuelans have their residence, who, unlike some 3,000 countrymen who live in the luxurious Salamanca neighborhood, cannot afford the gold-priced square meter in that area. Many are concentrated in the neighborhoods of San Diego and Numancia. Although it is the second most inhabited area also for those who come from Colombia, Ecuador, Honduras and Peru. A little further south, the Ensanche de Vallecas, has become another point of residence for some 2,000 Venezuelans.
And to the northeast, in the Ciudad Lineal district, but specifically in the Pueblo Nuevo neighborhood, an important colony of Venezuelans, Ecuadorians and Colombians is concentrated. On one side to the north of Calle Alcalá, more than 2,500 citizens of those two South American countries are registered. Nearly 9,000 Ecuadorians are located in this area according to place of birth —that is, without taking into account only nationality and that they probably have both—, 7,300 Venezuelans and some 5,800 Colombians.
The number of Latinos grows in the Community
The latest data available on the Latin American population in the Community of Madrid is from 2021. And that year it already included those coming from a Latin American country in more than 325,200. Although in the municipalities surrounding the capital the predominant foreign population continues to be Romanian —which accounts for more than 17% of the total number of foreigners— and Moroccans, 8%. Those who come from Latin America have been the ones that have arrived the most in recent years, since January 2020. Those from Venezuela, Colombia, Honduras and Peru have increased between 5% and 8%, with Honduras being the nationality that has most grown in the last two years.
The municipalities in the region with the highest percentage of foreign population are Parla (22.7%), Arganda del Rey (22.3%), Collado Villalba (21.8%), Torrejón de Ardoz (20.7%) and Coslada . These cities concentrate more of the population with foreign nationality than Madrid, which has 15.7%, according to figures for this year, although the capital has been the one that has received the most new residents from other countries in the last two years. The report does not distinguish the population by country of residence in each municipality, but notes that those from the American continent are mainly located in the towns of Colmenar Viejo, Galapagar, Villaviciosa de Odón, Quijorna, Leganés, Valdetorres del Jarama, Fuente el Saz de Jarama, Villaconejos and Cubas de la Sagra.
