The office of Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen revealed today, Saturday, the health and psychological condition of the Prime Minister after she was assaulted by a man, yesterday, Friday, in the center of the capital, Copenhagen.
The office said that the senior official suffered a minor neck injury.
The office said in a statement, “Other than that, the Prime Minister is fine and in good health, but she feels shocked by the incident,” adding that Frederiksen was taken to the hospital for a medical examination following the attack late on Friday evening.
Her office said that all of the Prime Minister’s official events scheduled for Saturday were cancelled.
Danish police said today that a 39-year-old man will appear before the Copenhagen City Court for preliminary questioning regarding the assault on the Prime Minister, but they declined to provide further details.
Neither the police nor the Prime Minister’s Office said anything about the man’s motives or whether he was carrying a weapon.
The attack comes two days before Danes go to the polls in the European Parliament elections.
A number of the bloc’s leaders condemned the attack, which occurred just three weeks after Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was seriously injured in an assassination attempt.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on the X platform, “The attack on Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is an intolerable act of violence and represents an attack on the essence of democratic values.”
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, also wrote on the X platform following the attack: “I was extremely shocked when I learned of the news that you (Friedrichsen) were attacked tonight. I denounce this despicable act that goes against everything we believe in and fight for in the country.” Europe, I wish you strength and courage, I know you have a lot of them.”
