In San Antonio, Texas, a man made a valuable find while cleaning his yard. Little did he expect that when doing gardening tasks, among the dirt, he would find a token from the last century, testimony to the era before prohibition in the United States and his time in the Lone Star State.
After publishing the image of the token, a history buff soon helped him find answers. Adam’s discovery corresponded to a coin that was used to receive a drink in a specific place. “It’s probably from the early 1900s,” the man said to KENS5.
On one side of the metal token, its value is identified: “IOU one drink”, which means “I owe you a drink”; while on the back the bar in which it was valid is noted, a place known as John Brady’s Parlor bar, which was located in the Solomon Deutsch building in the Plaza Mayor, in front of the San Fernando Cathedral.
The bar, which It closed its doors during Prohibition, as the period between 1920 and 1933 is regularly called, in which Prohibition was established in the United States.was an important meeting point in the city and the token found by Alvarado is testimony to its history.
Antiquities buried in the town
After publishing his discovery on social networks, Alvarado wondered if there were more centuries-old treasures hidden in the patio of his house. Sean Ward, a history buff, contacted him and offered to check the land with a metal detector. “My grandfather was a coin collector, and he made me interested in that hobby,” the man revealed.
Although they found nothing else on the ground. Ward said he has discovered different antiques while exploring different old neighborhoods in San Antonio. Among which three cans of ammunition from World War II stand out; an 1879 penny; several Mexican cents from 1880; musket balls from the Civil War era; and, several mini bullets from the Civil War.
The value of the token found by Alvarado is estimated between US$100 and US$125. The man from Lavaca decided to keep his bar token, since he considers that the story is worth much more than that money. “Maybe he can hang it on the wall or something, so it’s a conversation piece,” he revealed.
