A British investigator testifies in the trial against Maddie suspect Christian B. His statements could shed light on the case.
Braunschweig – Almost exactly 17 years ago, little Maddie disappeared in Portugal. Now an experienced British investigator has appeared before the Braunschweig regional court Trial against Christian B. stated. He is charged with various sexual offenses. During his testimony, the witness was particularly careful not to reveal any details about the investigation into Maddie’s case.
Statement in the trial against Christian B.: “I was instructed to only speak about the witness”
“I was instructed to only talk about the witness, not Maddie,” explained the 49-year-old. By “the witness” he was referring to a 53-year-old man who is considered the main witness in the current trial against the 47-year-old German.
Christian B., a sex offender with multiple previous convictions, is accused of a total of three rapes and two cases of sexual abuse of children in Portugal in the Braunschweig trial. The trial is attracting great international interest due to suspicions against B. in the case of three-year-old Madeleine McCann, also known as Maddie, who disappeared from a Portuguese holiday resort in 2007. However, Maddie’s case is not the subject of the current hearing. It is the presumption of innocence.
British investigator testifies about another witness who is said to have provided information about Maddie
The Scotland Yard investigator resisted any questions that even remotely pointed to Maddie. “I’m not allowed to go into details,” he emphasized. Another Witness, however, revealed shocking details.
However, he reported that in 2017 the witness left a message on the English police answering machine claiming to be able to provide information about the Maddie case. The investigator went on to say that a two-day meeting then took place in Greece. During this meeting, the witness is said to have reported, among other things, two videos with scenes of rape in which he claims to have recognized the defendant. These two alleged rapes are now part of the indictment. The crimes are said to have taken place between 2000 and 2006. The problem: The women affected could not be identified and the videos are missing.
Next day of trial in the Christian B. case on May 15th
Since the alleged victims of these crimes cannot be found, the next day of the trial on May 15th is eagerly awaited. Then the alleged victim of the third accused rape is supposed to testify in Braunschweig. In 2004, the defendant is said to have brutally raped a then 20-year-old woman from Ireland. In recent years, the Irish woman’s case, alongside Maddie’s disappearance, has repeatedly been the subject of reporting in the Irish and British media. The Daily Mail quoted the woman as saying: “I can’t wait to look my tormentor in the eyes and see him in court.”

The Irish woman became aware of the possibility that B. could be her tormentor through reporting on the rape of an elderly American woman, for which B. is currently serving a prison sentence. When reading the media reports, she vomited “because it transported me straight back to my experience,” she told the in 2020 Guardian. (dt/dpa)
