Elly Schlein goes from one group to another on the Transatlantic amidst the smiles of her parents. The European electoral campaign having ended – even if the run-off elections in the municipalities are about to open – the secretary of the Democratic Party takes up the ranks of opposition work in Parliament. And she does it from new power relations after the good result of the European elections. He chats with Benedetto Della Vedova and Riccardo Magi, fresh from the electoral disappointment for the United States of Europe. “He asked me about Albania, in those days we had only messaged each other and he wanted me to tell her how it went”, says Magi.
In the Schlein courtyard hugs Nicola Fratoianni, congratulates the success of Avs. “We complimented each other and took stock of the parliamentary battles,” says Fratoianni. And with you? “I haven’t heard it yet, I will soon.” In Bari will you keep your pact to support Vito Leccese in the second round? “But of course, it will be a large victory”, predicts the leader of Si who had supported Michele Laforgia with the 5 Stars, while he also thinks of his Umbria and the victory in the first round which escaped by a few hundred votes in Perugia with Vittoria Ferdinandi, there where the coalition is already a broad centre-left. Giuseppe Conte, the secretary of the Democratic Party, heard from him on Monday, the M5S leader called her to compliment the Pd’s result. “No feud in the progressive camp”, M5S sources said.
Yesterday morning Schlein brought together the deputies and senators of the Democratic Party to take stock of the parliamentary battles. In the Senate there is the premiership, autonomy in the Chamber. Two measures on which to unite the opposition in a common front. A common battle that materializes just a few hours later when the Democratic Party asks in the chamber to postpone the examination of autonomy. “The South – Marco Sarracino said in the chamber – voted en masse against differentiated autonomy and you cannot fail to see it”. All oppositions join the request.
“Stop the vetoes, tough opposition on the social issue”
“The fact that we are the first party in the South gives a clear indication: they must focus on autonomy”, underlines Schlein with the Pd parliamentarians who calls for a “tough opposition”. The secretary says: “I thank the group leaders for the work done to stop the cynical exchange between differentiated autonomy and the premiership. They must stop and I invite the groups to continue in strong opposition without concessions. We must act as a tough opposition and insert ourselves into the divisions of the majority ”.
And then turning to the other opposition forces he adds: “We hope that this result has convinced everyone, absolutely everyone, that it is no longer a time for divisions and vetoes, we no longer intend to suffer from vetoes”. While he asks his parliamentarians to insist or rather “hammer” on the social question, on the issues that have identified the Democratic Party in recent months and have rewarded it in terms of consensus: “We have halved the distance from the Brothers of Italy compared to previous policies. We are coming, but we must continue to insist on our proposals, starting with public health with the bill signed by me for the first time. Meloni – recalls Schlein – tried to constantly move us away from our themes but we didn’t fall into his trap and so let’s move on with our themes, let’s hammer on the social question and the distance with Fdi ai will shorten even further ”.
The line is indicated, the work to build an alternative on a common project is just beginning. “It will be a long journey” to politics, observes Magi. Angelo Bonelli invites us to start tackling the crossing together, immediately: “What I want to say to Schlein and Conte is that the time has come to break the deadlock. We need to start a phase of intense confrontation, the democratic oppositions must be united” starting from the “attempt of this right to dismantle the Constitution” with the premiership.
