FT: Russia overtook the United States in gas supplies to Europe in May 2024
In May 2024, Russia overtook the United States in gas supplies to Europe. About it reports Financial Times (FT) with reference to data from the analytical company ICIS.
“Although the reversal was influenced by special circumstances, it highlights the difficulty of further reducing Europe’s dependence on Russian gas,” the material says. It is noted that some Eastern European countries still depend on gas imports from Russia.
According to the company, in May of this year, gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from Russia accounted for 15 percent of total supplies to the countries of the European Union, the UK, Switzerland, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia. The article notes that the share of LNG supplies from the United States to those same countries was 14 percent, the lowest since August 2022.
In the first half of May, the Central Bank (CB) reported that the growth rate of the Russian economy in January-March amounted to 4.6 percent. In the second quarter of 2024, as the regulator expects, the positive trend will continue and amount to 4.4 percent compared to April-June 2023.
