The International Committee of the Red Cross confirmed that Sudan is facing a health crisis with the destruction of medical infrastructure, and that two out of three civilians are no longer able to access basic health services after most hospitals and health care centers in the country were forced to close their doors as a result of the conflict.
The committee said in a statement yesterday in Geneva that the repeated attacks on health facilities and their workers have dire consequences in light of the worsening food crisis, stressing that health care centers are essential for preventing, detecting and treating malnutrition.
The situation in health clinics is catastrophic, said Amelie Chabat, who oversees health programmes for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Sudan, with wounded people lacking medicine, food and water, and the elderly, women and children deprived of basic treatments such as kidney dialysis or diabetes medications, among others.
The Committee added that providing health care is an obligation under international humanitarian law, and stressed that medical personnel must be allowed to perform their duties in accordance with medical ethics in a safe and secure environment.
Earlier, the UAE expressed in a statement its deep concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan and the severe food insecurity affecting more than 25 million Sudanese citizens.
She also expressed her deep concern following the declaration of famine in parts of North Darfur, especially in Zamzam camp, which houses more than half a million displaced persons, and the possibility of famine in Abu Shouk and Al Salam camps, and the other nine Sudanese states whose residents are living under catastrophic levels of hunger.
In this regard, the UAE welcomed, in the statement, the meeting held by the Security Council, which focused on the urgent need to address the famine in Sudan, stressing the importance of the international community continuing its focus on Sudan.
She also stressed that the humanitarian crisis in Sudan requires an emergency response that helps secure a ceasefire and facilitates the rapid delivery of humanitarian aid.
