Russia sees Stoltenberg’s comments as a ‘warlike ecstasy’. The possible lifting of weapons restrictions is causing unrest.
Moscow – Tensions between Russia and NATO continue to rise in the wake of the war in Ukraine. While Vladimir Putin, together with the local despot Lukashenko, flexes his nuclear weapons muscles and simultaneously hits a Ukrainian hardware store with missiles, the Kremlin is now accusing NATO of “warlike ecstasy”.
Moscow is referring to statements by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. He had called for restrictions on the use of Western weapons against targets in Russia to be lifted. “NATO is increasing the level of escalation, NATO is playing with war rhetoric and falling into warlike ecstasy,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian media during a state visit by President Vladimir Putin to the Uzbek capital Tashkent on Monday.
“Warlike ecstasy”: Kremlin spokesman escalates after NATO announcement
Peskov was responding to Stoltenberg’s statements that member states should consider relaxing some restrictions on the use of Western weapons against Russian targets. Stoltenberg explained: “Under international law, the right to self-defense includes the right to attack legitimate military targets outside Ukraine. This is part of self-defense.” He cited the Ukrainian region of Kharkiv as a possible scenario for the use of Western weapons, where the front line and the Russian border almost coincide.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly called for the restrictions imposed by the USA and other Western allies on the use of weapons supplied to Kiev to be lifted. Zelensky wants to use this to combat the aggressor’s positions on Russian territory more effectively. So far, Ukraine has used its own weapons, especially drones, to attack Russia. Western missiles, for example, are mainly used to attack Russian positions in the occupied Ukrainian territories in order to liberate them.
After NATO demand, it becomes clear how much Russia fears the change
Recently, there have been increasing international calls to allow Western weapons to be used to attack targets in Russia. In return, Moscow has repeatedly warned of an escalation of violence in the war that Putin started more than two years ago on February 24, 2022. Kremlin spokesman Peskov also said that NATO is already directly involved in the conflict. Russia is therefore continuing its war to stop the threat posed by NATO. (dpa/rjs)
