Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in China yesterday for a two-day state visit, his first since his re-election as president.
According to diplomatic protocol, the “state visit” is the highest level in the hierarchy of foreign visits by state leaders.
Putin’s assistant for international affairs, Yuri Ushakov, said earlier that it was not a coincidence that China was chosen as President Putin’s first foreign destination after his re-election.
He pointed out that this visit comes in response to a similar visit made by Chinese leader Xi Jinping to Russia last year.
Yesterday, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that Moscow and Beijing were able to achieve a great deal of practical cooperation.
During his meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in the Great Hall of the People in the Chinese capital, Beijing, Putin said: “Moscow and Beijing have already achieved a great deal of practical cooperation, as the volume of bilateral trade has increased by about a quarter and reached a good level of $227 billion in 2023.”
Putin added that China is Russia’s main partner in the trade and economic field.
Putin said: “According to the results of last year, Russia advanced to fourth place in the list of China’s trading partner countries, and the plan to develop the main areas of Russian-Chinese economic cooperation until 2030 was approved after your visit to Moscow in March 2023.”
At the beginning of the talks, Putin welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping, stressing that he was sincerely happy to return to hospitable China among his friends after six months.
Putin said to the Chinese President: “Thank you for the congratulatory message on the occasion of my re-election as President of Russia, and I thank you very much for the invitation.”
