Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed his former bodyguard Alexei Dyumin to a senior government position, according to a Kremlin statement yesterday, which stated that Putin appointed 51-year-old Dyumin as secretary of the Russian State Council, according to Bloomberg News Agency.
The State Council is the body responsible for developing “strategic goals and tasks of domestic and foreign policy,” in cooperation with the Kremlin, government officials, parliamentarians, and heads of Russian regions.
Putin, 71 years old, had appointed Dyumin as his assistant in a reshuffle he made this May after his inauguration for a fifth presidential term.
Dumin has served in Putin’s personal security unit since 1999, rising to become one of his closest bodyguards, and once said he protected President Putin from a bear.
Dyumin is also one of the close officials who plays ice hockey with Putin.
