The AfD sees itself under pressure after a series of scandals at EU and Bundestag level. A survey reveals the consequences of the Krah and Bystron scandals.
Berlin – Now the AfD apparently caught after all. After the bribery scandal involving Bundestag MP Petr Bystron blew up in the AfD’s face and shortly afterwards an employee of AfD MEP Maximilian Krah was arrested, the AfD is now paying the price. In an Insa poll, the AfD has suffered a bitter defeat.
At the beginning of the year in January, the AfD was able to score well in the Sunday question for the federal election: 20 percent of the votes and 43 direct mandates. In Saxony, the far-right party could have won 13 out of 15 constituencies. But now comes the bombshell: all the scandals of the last few months are now leaving their mark on voters – the 43 direct mandates are history. According to the new Insa survey, the AfD is only awarded 17 direct mandates. A devastating result.
Krah in custody and investigations against Bystron: implications for the European elections?
In West Germany, the party could only win one constituency. In the east of the country, it would only win three constituencies in Brandenburg, ten in Saxony and three in Thuringia. A serious setback for the party – and that just before the upcoming state elections in East Germany and the upcoming European elections. The local elections in Thuringia this Sunday (26 May) will probably be an important indicator for the upcoming elections.
The scandals of the last few months are now having an impact: Both leading candidates for the European elections are involved in affairs – Krah’s employee is currently in custody for alleged intelligence activities for China. In the case of Petr Bystron, corruption is suspected – and with money from Russia of all places. They are even said to have possibly brought a spy into the Bundestag, according to research by T-online had found out.
Unexpected result for the European election poll: AfD remains stable
In an Insa survey of Picture on Sunday The AfD, on the other hand, remains stable at 17 percent. The SPD in particular has to accept a loss of 1.5 percentage points, and thus only comes in at 14 percent overall. The Union is gaining some momentum and is increasing to a total of 30 percent, with an increase of one percentage point. The Greens are also remaining stable at 13 percent. Sahra Wagenknecht’s new party, the BSW, would come in at 7 percent straight away, while the Left Party, on the other hand, loses one percentage point and slips to just 3 percent.
However, election polls are generally subject to uncertainty and cannot make a clear prediction for the upcoming elections. They merely reflect the mood of the respondents. Around 1,000 people were surveyed online for the Insa survey. (sure)
