This Friday, the 19th, the Federal Police (PF) began an operation in Maranhão to eradicate the illicit cultivation of marijuana on indigenous lands. The focus is the municipality of Grajaú, which is 570 kilometers from São Luís.
To date, 12 people have been arrested and may face charges of drug trafficking and association for drug trafficking. The combined sentences can reach 30 years in prison.
The police eliminated more than seven thousand marijuana plants, spread over an area of approximately 7,680 square meters. They also seized ready-made marijuana, drug press equipment and weapons.
Operation Terra Livre mobilizes a task force of 65 federal police officers, as well as agents from the Federal Highway Police, Fire Department, National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples (Funai), Maranhão Public Security Secretariat, Military Police and Civil Police.
