Obesity and diabetes are closely linked, so much so that they have led to the birth of the neologism 'diabesity'. Excessive weight multiplies the risk of this metabolic disease by 10 times in women and by 6 times in males, according to scientific literature. And a 5% weight loss is enough for the risk of diabetes to decrease by 40%. To recall the data, on the occasion of World Obesity Day which is celebrated today, the Italian diabetology society (Sid) underlines how the problem is particularly felt in Italy, where the risk of overweight and obesity has been particularly high since pediatric age.
According to the latest “Childhood obesity surveillance initiative” report from the European Office of the World Health Organization, our country ranks 4th in Europe for the prevalence of overweight and obesity, just under 40%, exceeded only from Cyprus, Greece and Spain. For obesity alone, however, our country is in second place in Europe.
“An obese child has a 75-80% chance of becoming an obese adult at high risk of diabetes”, explains Angelo Avogaro, president of Sid “To combat this phenomenon, in addition to a healthy and varied diet, daily physical activity is needed , in Italy little is still too little widespread: 44.8% of adult Italians do not practice an adequate level of physical activity, while this percentage reaches 94.5% in children, the last OECD country”.
