In Japan they are not yet very concerned about the electric car. A paltry 2.2 percent of new cars in the country would be electric in 2023. Here in the Netherlands that share was 30.8 percent. Perhaps a lower price will lead to more EV sales in Japan. And to make electric cars cheaper, Nissan wants to enter into a partnership with Honda.
Nissan's idea is according to Nikkei to build an electric motor and shared platform for electric cars together with Honda. It is not surprising that two car brands help each other to reduce production costs. The special thing is that Nissan is already in the group with Renault and Mitsubishi. Will Renault also work indirectly with Honda? Or are the two brands really still islands?
Nissan previously ruled out a partnership with Honda
What makes the potential collaboration between Honda and Nissan even more special is a quote from a few years ago. In 2020, the Japanese government suggested that Honda and Nissan should join forces. A top Nissan executive responded strongly Financial Times: 'A Nissan-Honda partnership would only make sense to people who don't understand the auto industry.'
For the time being, the possible collaboration is still in the exploratory phase. That's certainly better than the denial phase. Honda acknowledges that there are discussions, but does not want to comment further on them to the media. Previously, an EV pact with General Motors failed for Honda. The two found each other in the construction of fuel tanks for hydrogen cars.
