Asked about an alleged absence during the tragedy, senator from Rio Grande do Sul says he is 70 years old and claims to work “on top of legislation”
The senator Hamilton Mourão (Republicanos-RS) said this Friday (May 24, 2024) that it would be “function desviation” need for a greater presence in Rio Grande do Sul due to the floods that hit the state. The statement was given in an interview with Radio Gaucha.
The congressman also asked people to remember that he is 70 years old, in response to the criticism he has received for his actions in the face of the tragedy. “How many 70-year-old men are there, in the middle of the water? If you tell me there is someone my age saving people.”he stated.
Asked where he was in recent weeks, the congressman said he works in the Senate. “[Local que] the people of Rio Grande do Sul placed me and where I have to seek, through improving legislation, to meet the desires of our population”he said.
Despite not having participated in direct aid, the senator stated that he sent carts of donations and was in Rio Grande do Sul at the beginning of the tragedy. Furthermore, he declared that he had presented a work plan for the External Temporary Committee created in the Senate to monitor the State’s situation.
“We are working on legislation, to speed up the delivery of resources, to convince our parliamentary brothers to allocate amendments that were for their States to Rio Grande do Sul”he stated.
Mourão was elected senator for Rio Grande do Sul in 2022, when he obtained 44.11% of the votes. Previously, he was vice president during the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
According to the senator, his job is to represent the entire state and “not just the community focused”.
