This Saturday, the Civil Guard recovered the lifeless body of Gerard Olivé, a 41-year-old mountaineer and resident of Tivissa (Tarragona), in the Salenques valley, in the municipality of Montanuy (Huesca).
The mountaineer’s family informed the Huesca Civil Guard of the mountaineer’s absence on January 2 and detailed that he had disappeared after leaving his vehicle parked in the Senarta parking lot, in Benasque, with the intention of climbing Aneto. However, the mountaineer did not return homeaccording to Europa Press.
Immediately, the Civil Guard activated a search device in which they participated members of the GREIM of Benasque and the Huesca Air Unit.
At 1:30 p.m. this Saturday, they located Olivé in the valley, in the municipality of Montanuy, with signs not compatible with life: He allegedly suffered a vertical fall from the top of the Salenques ridge.
The deceased has been evacuated and transferred on the aircraft to the Benasque helipad, where the funeral services were waiting for him, to transfer him to the Institute of Legal Medicine of Aragon (IMLA), in Zaragoza.
«With a broken heart, we share that Gerard has left us unexpectedly while doing one of the things he liked most: enjoying the mountains. We thank all of you who know him and love him for your expressions of affection and support. Gerard will always be with us on every peak, every landscape and every record. We love you,” they shared on their Instagram account.
A chef in love with the mountains
Training chef, Olivé ended up practicing bivouac -consisting of sleeping outdoors in a temporary shelter, generally in the mountains- as an escape route to manage the stress generated by his work. After studying hospitality in Gerona, receiving classes from Joan Roca and working at Ferrán Adriá’s El Bulli, he rose in his job with the resulting increase in pressure.
The stress generated by his work, together with a painful breakup, ended up leading him to look for a way to channel adrenaline. “Inspired by the documentaries of ‘On the Edge of the Impossible,'” as he explained to ABC almost two years ago, he began bivouac.
“My first bivouac was the most beautiful day of my life,” he told this newspaper at the time. Since then, he continued doing what he liked most: enjoy the mountains.
