The inevitable changes to the MotoGP calendar again lead riders and teams to stop in Portugal, in the Algarve region, for one second GP in the homonymous racetrack. In this case, the positive opinion was unanimous: the nature of the track, its spectacularity and the ability to test the technical and human side have always placed the Portuguese asphalt at the top of the list of drivers’ satisfaction and team.
For Aleix, who had an excellent weekend in Portimao in April, the goal of a good final placement among the drivers remains a priority. Now eighth in the standings, the Spanish rider is rewarded for his commitment to the development of an RS-GP that has reached a very high level of competitiveness. With a podium already conquered this season and the possibility, however challenging, to gain a few more positions in the standings.
Maverick Viñales faces the Portuguese race comforted by what he showed in the great comeback at Misano, which saw him finish just behind his teammate after starting from nineteenth position, and where he was among the fastest in the race. The growing feeling with the Italian bike gives hope for a conclusion of 2021 that will be the right viaticum in preparation for the next, fundamental, championship.
Aleix Espargarò: “We are returning to Portimao in very different conditions compared to the first race, both for the weather and because in the meantime we got to know the new RS-GP better. It is a track that I like, where we had a good first race, I can’t wait to go back to lap to check our improvements. We have two races available to finish this championship well“.
Maverick Viñales: “I arrive in Portimao with decidedly positive feelings. The step taken in the race at Misano is not only in the final placement, in fact we worked a lot on the RS-GP and eventually found a decisive improvement, which we can also take advantage of here. Our goal is just that, to continue to understand this new bike and the chemistry with my riding style. To better prepare for 2022 and, why not, try to take away some satisfaction before the end of the season“.
