María Isabel Urrutia will be the Minister of Sports, according to Óscar Figueroa

María Isabel Urrutia would be the Minister of Sports of President-elect Gustavo Petro, according to Olympic medalist Oscar Figueroa. However, although everything seems to indicate that this will be the case, the appointment has not been made official.

“Today I celebrate and support the appointment of María Isabel Urrutia as the first Afro-descendant minister of Colombian sports.: the first female athlete to win Olympic gold in the country. I am sure that with her experience, example and discipline, she will guide the administration along the winning path, as we Colombian athletes have never seen before. We will support you in managing it. May our achievements be all the pillars of everything we want to build for Colombian sport and society. The change has come,” Figueroa said in a video posted on her Instagram account.

The resume of María Isabel Urrutia

María Isabel Urrutia was the first Colombian athlete to win Olympic gold: she did so in Sydney 2000. She was also world weightlifting champion, a sport she reached after starting in athletics.

After her retirement as an active athlete, Urrutia was elected representative to the Chamber for the special circumscription of blacks. She also presented herself as a candidate for mayor of Cali. In the last times, María Isabel had worked as a trainer at Deporte Capital.
