Tragedy details
• The explosive device exploded when the bus was passing on the road between Bandiagara and Gondaka in the Mopti region on Thursday afternoon, according to a security source.
• Musa Hosseini of the local Bandiagara Youth Association said: “We just brought 9 bodies to the hospital, and it’s not over yet.”
• Later, a medical source announced that 47 wounded in the attack were taken to the hospital, indicating that the bombing resulted in 53 wounded.
Security sources had reported an initial toll of about 10 dead and a number of wounded in the blast, while the new toll confirmed the Bandiagara municipality.
For years, Mali has been witnessing a rebellion that has claimed thousands of people and forced hundreds of thousands to flee their homes.
Mines and improvised explosive devices are among the militants’ preferred weapons, and these bombs explode when a vehicle’s wheel passes over them, or are detonated from a distance.
