Publisher Paradox Interactive and development studio Paradox Tectonic have announced the permanent cancellation of the life simulator Life by You, after postponing its Early Access launch several times. It was expected on Steam and Epic Games Store, but it didn’t make it to the market, despite being practically ready.
The message of cancellation
This is the message with which Paradox made the announcement: “Unfortunately, we have decided to cancel the release of our highly anticipated life simulator, Life by You. It was an incredibly difficult decision to make and it is a clear failure on Paradox’s part in meeting our and the community’s expectations.
We understand that this choice raises big questions; We therefore hope to clarify at least in part why we decided to cancel, instead of granting a further postponement.
Life by You has been in development for a long time and we have always been excited about the game’s potential. Our hope has always been that he could make his mark in this genre, which is new and exciting for us. That’s why we decided to postpone it twice: to give the studio and the game a real chance to realize the potential we saw in it. With each referral, we saw improvements, which in hindsight may have led us to focus on the details instead of the big picture.
A few weeks ago, we decided to delay the Early Access release to reevaluate Life by You, as we still felt that was lacking in some key areas. While a further extension was among the options, when we took a broader view of the game, we realized that the road to a launch we felt confident about was too long and uncertain.
That’s not to say the game didn’t have promising qualities; Life by You had many strengths and behind it was the hard work of the team that made them possible. However, when we got to the point where we felt that more time wouldn’t get us close enough to a version we were happy with, then we thought it best to stop. Obviously it’s a tough and disappointing situation for everyone who put their time and enthusiasm into the projectespecially because our decision came so late in the development process.
Ultimately, our job is to publish fun, interesting and challenging games for our players, and our every decision should be made with this purpose in mind. When we succeed, we earn a salary. So how can we make sure we never find ourselves in this situation again? Honestly, there are no certainties. Developing video games is difficult, and we will certainly make mistakes that, as always, will become evident in hindsight, but which nevertheless they should not reach this scale. We need to carefully analyze what got us here and see what changes we need to make to improve. Ultimately, our mission remains the same and we will continue to take all necessary steps to pursue it.”
