Satakunta on Monday, the district court gave a verdict in the homicide case that rocked Rauma on Valentine’s Day.
The court sentenced the one born in 1996 Roni Oliver Myllykankaan 10 years to unconditional imprisonment for murder, theft, endangerment, aggravated firearms offense and drug use offence.
The prosecutor demanded that Myllykanka be sentenced to life imprisonment for the robbery and murder of a 49-year-old man from Rauma. The district court therefore reduced the charges of murder and aggravated robbery.
The right the big question to be resolved was whether Myllykangas went to the victim’s apartment heavily armed and with the aim of stealing property.
Myllykangas shot the victim with an AK-47 type assault rifle from a distance of about three meters.
According to the prosecutor, the act met the hallmarks of murder, because it was done with solid deliberation and in a particularly brutal and cruel manner. Myllykangas was equipped for the robbery with, in addition to the assault rifle, protective vests, two magazines and at least a few dozen cartridges suitable for the gun. The victim was defenseless.
According to Myllykanka, the issue was gross negligence at most.
The judges considered that no reliable conclusions can be drawn from the events in the apartment. In addition to the motive, how the gun and cartridges ended up in the victim’s apartment remained unclear.
According to the verdict, the mere fact that the victim was on or in front of the couch does not make the act particularly cruel or brutal. There was also not enough evidence that the motive of the act was to usurp property or that the usurpation used violence that met the hallmarks of robbery.
The victim’s purse and various cards were confiscated from Myllykanka’s possession. The 377.55 euros found in Myllykanga’s shoulder bag was ordered by the court to be returned to Myllykanga. The victim’s fingerprints were not found on the money.
Mill cloth was also obliged to pay compensation to the victim’s daughter and a total of about 20,000 euros for various expenses.
The district court ordered Myllykanka to be held in custody and Turku prison as the place of transit.
The judgment is not binding.
People of Satakunta could not be reached on Monday by the prosecutor Ville Niiniviitaa to comment on whether he plans to appeal the sentence to the Court of Appeal. Defense attorney Teemu Kemppi said that a decision on whether to accept or appeal the verdict has not yet been made.
