Apple recently unveiled macOS Sequoia, the next version of its desktop operating system, introducing transformative new ways of working and intelligent features for Macs. The update promises to revolutionize the user experience with a series of new features, including Mirroring of the iPhone, which expands continuity by allowing full access and control of the iPhone directly from macOS. Safari receives a major update with the Highlights feature, which makes it easier to discover information while browsing. Plus, the new Passwords app makes it even easier to access and organize your credentials in one place. Gaming benefits from a more immersive experience and a wide range of new titles, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Frostpunk 2.
macOS Sequoia introduces Apple Intelligence, an artificial intelligence system for Mac, iPhone and iPad that combines the power of generative models with personal context. Built with privacy as a foundation, Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into macOS Sequoia, iOS 18, and iPadOS 18. This capability understands and creates language and images, performs cross-app actions, and leverages personal context to simplify and speed up everyday tasks. Furthermore, Apple Intelligence will be integrated with OpenAI’s ChatGPT to also respond to all requests relating to the web and other topics. It will be available in beta and only in English during the summer, and will arrive later in other languages. All Apple Intelligence features will only work with Macs equipped with Apple chips, M1 and up.
macOS Sequoia will introduce a continuity feature long awaited by Apple users, iPhone Mirroring, allowing users to fully access and interact with their iPhone directly from the Mac. This feature allows you to view your iPhone’s custom wallpaper and icons , flip through Home screen pages, launch and navigate through your favorite apps, receive iPhone notifications on your Mac, and of course make and receive calls. Furthermore, it supports StandBy function, visible to let you get information at a glance. When the iPhone is used via macOS, the phone remains locked to avoid any privacy issues.
Safari introduces Highlights, a new feature that makes it easier to discover information on the web. The redesigned Reader Mode offers new ways to enjoy articles without distractions, with an optimized article view, a table of contents and a table of contents for longer articles. The Viewer feature brings videos to the forefront while maintaining access to the system’s playback controls, including Picture in Picture mode. Gaming also takes a step forward on Mac: macOS Sequoia welcomes a rich line-up of games, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Frostpunk 2, taking advantage of advanced technologies such as MetalFX Upscaling to improve performance and visual quality. Additionally, new features like custom spatial audio and reduced audio latency with AirPods Pro enhance the gaming experience. The Game Porting Toolkit 2 makes porting advanced games to Apple devices even easier.
macOS Sequoia introduces new ways to organize windows on your desktop. Users can drag a window to the edge of the screen to get grid positioning suggestions, allowing for quick and neat arrangement of windows. A new preview makes sharing screenshots easier, allowing you to see in advance what will be shared. There are built-in backgrounds and the ability to upload personal photos to replace the background during video calls, improving the quality of presentations on apps like FaceTime and Zoom. Finally, an app entirely dedicated to passwords will also arrive on Sequoia. Powered by the Keychain, Passwords makes it easy to access your passwords, passkeys, and other credentials in one place, with secure syncing via iCloud and end-to-end encryption. The developer beta of macOS Sequoia is available through the Apple Developer Program, and a public beta will be available next month. The final update will be released in the fall, free for everyone.
