The 2021 Formula 1 season saw Ferrari return to third force in the World Championship after the disastrous 2020 campaign that had seen it drop even to sixth place, the worst result in the last 40 years. The goal given at the beginning of the season by Mattia Binotto was therefore achieved and we saw interesting steps forward that bode well for the 2022, year of the almost mandatory redemption for Maranello, with the advent of the new technical regulation. Third place among the manufacturers aside, in fact, Ferrari has not been competing for the title since 2018 and has not won a GP since 2019. Definitely too much time for the most titled F1 team.
Team principal Binotto said beating Mercedes and Red Bull shouldn’t be experienced as a “obligation”. Certainly, however, Ferrari fans would not be satisfied with finishing the championship again 290 points behind Mercedes. L’engineer Luigi Mazzola, former man of the red team at the time of Michael Schumacher’s triumphs, spoke to the Gazzetta dello Sport expectations for next year, calling for greater audacity on the part of all the leaders of Ferrari. “The third place in 2021 can also be positive, given the previous year – recognized the former Cavallino engineer – there have been improvements. The goal, which is to be the first of the others, behind Mercedes and Red Bull, has been achieved “.
“Now though – he added – Given all that has been said about 2021 and that all the technical efforts have been put into 2022, I expect a competitive Ferrari. AND I wouldn’t be satisfied with winning a few races. For the mentality of a Ferrari and a racer I would like to hear ‘I want to compete to win the world championship’. Then we will see what happens. The difference will be made by the management of the car on the track, I am referring to the mechanical and aerodynamic adjustments, to the use of the tires. With few tests available, some will arrive sooner, others later: and there may be some surprises. But Ferrari must be ready. It’s time, isn’t it?“.
