They have achieved it. I think they cannot be denied. The new format of the Champions League is a success. This week, with the last day of the year being held – there will be two pending for January – is a good time to confess it. Even those staunch defenders of the classic format and reticent to innovation have reached this point in the season having to admit that, indeed, this brand new model is a success. With aspects to improve, obviously. But the invention has opened a window of fresh air in a competition that was already beginning to smell stale. Or, at the very least, worn out.
