The Giro d’Italia 2024 offers today the 17th stage, the 159 km Selva di Val Gardena – Passo Brocon. The stage on May 22nd is still full of climbs, with 5 mountain Grand Prix and another eventful day on the horizon: possibility of escapes and ‘long-range’ initiatives, but a new show from the Tadej pink jersey cannot be ruled out Pogacar, lord of the climbs and winner of 5 stages already.
Today’s section is short, less than 160 km, but extremely challenging. Passo Sella, a first category GPM, arrives after just 8.9 km with a start characterized by gradients of up to 11%. Then, about 38 km of descent to Predazzo, from where we start pushing again to climb up to Passo Rolle (km 67), another first category GPM to be reached after 20 km of gradual ascent, with the gradient varying between 4 ,8 and 10%.
The 100 km stage is ‘celebrated’ with the comfortable passage over the Gobbera Pass, a third category GPM which precedes the finale with the 2 passages over the Brocon Pass. The first ascent on the north side is 13.3% long with gradients between 6.5 and 12% up to the second category GPM. Then, the epilogue: ‘assault’ on the southern front of the Pass to close the stage with a first category GPM with gradients of up to 13%.
The stage on TV and streaming
The sixteenth stage of the Giro d’Italia will be broadcast live on free-to-air TV and in streaming. Rai will talk about the day of the second stage in free-to-air broadcast every day of the race. Arrival is expected between 5.10pm and 5.30pm.
For the key part of the programming, the Corsa Rosa schedule moves to Rai 2, with ‘Giro in Diretta’ and ‘Giro all’Arrivo’.
