One person has died and eight are still buried under rubble after part of a hotel collapsed in Kröv, on the banks of the Moselle in a wine-growing region in Rhineland-Palatinate. Rescue operations are still ongoing and the reason for the collapse is not yet known.
One of the people still under the rubble, according to press reports citing the police, is a child, who is said to be in good condition. Kröv is located about a hundred kilometers from Frankfurt, not far from the border with Luxembourg. The accident occurred late yesterday evening. When a floor of the building collapsed, there were 14 people in the hotel, and 5 were saved.
Firefighters sent to the scene have managed to communicate with some of the people trapped under the rubble, some are seriously injured and rescuers have not yet recovered the body of the person who lost their life. Rescue operations, police say, are made very difficult by the instability of the part of the building that did not collapse and the likelihood of further collapses. Around thirty people who were in nearby buildings were also evacuated due to the risk of damage that a complete collapse could cause to the surrounding area. The Moselle region is a popular summer tourist destination.
