The Flying Dutchman European Championship has taken a new step today in the waters of the Bay of Cádiz, with the dispute of one more test that totals five and one discard. The wind continues to attract attention for another day, this time from the west, rising from 13 to 26 knots in intensity, reaching the advisable limit to end the day and send the fleet to land. The championship adds a new test in a spectacular racing area, favored on the shoreline and in which the key has been wave management. The nerves of the candidates who fight in extreme equality were felt in several disqualifications for premature starts, after two failed start attempts with more than half of the boats out of line.
Like the rain of May, the ruling has arrived for some, since of the five crews fighting for the continental title, three of them have been sanctioned in the race; the German current world champions, Kay-Uwe Ludtke and Kai Schafers, their countrymen Kilian Koenig and Johannes Brack, and the Dutch Enno Kramer and Ard Geelkerken. Their circumstance is taken advantage of by the Hungarians Szalbolcs Majthenyi and Andras Domokos who rise from fifth to first place after winning today’s test, and the Italians Nicola and Francesco Vespasiani who are third with a 7th that they discard. Looking ahead to the final day things remain just as fair, with the Hungarians leading by one and two points over the Germans Ludtke and Schafers and the Italians, and two more over the Germans Koenig and Brack and the Dutch, tied for fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Among the Spaniards, the ‘Timón de Roche’ of Fran Martínez from Torrevieja and Pepe Ruiz from Cádiz shines today, surfing the waves of the Cádiz bay until they enter ninth in the leading group, a position that is enough for them to climb a position and place themselves in the top9 . Martínez and Ruiz oust the RCN de Torrevieja crew formed by Ginés Romero and Álvaro Moreno from first place in the national team, who punctured due to an off-line with a maximum penalty and dropped to twelfth place.
The outcome of the championship this Saturday will be impressive, on a day in which two final tests are expected to be completed. Then, in the afternoon, the trophies will be presented to the new European Flying Dutchman champions. In addition to the continental title that will be won by the first classified crew, the class will also present the Conrad Gulcher Challenge Trophy to the best skipper and crew classified without discard, and the Rodney Pattisson Superdoz Trophy to the best skipper under 26 years of age and the best female rod.
