Several provinces in southern China issued warnings of severe floods due to heavy rains, while the National Meteorological Center warned yesterday of high temperatures.
The center expected that the high temperatures would subside in northern China and areas between the Yellow River and the Huai River, and that maximum temperatures would be recorded between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius in parts of the regions of Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Henan.
Heavy rain has been falling in Fujian Province, southeast of the country, for 7 days, and is expected to continue, with water levels in some rivers exceeding warning levels.
China Central Television reported that several water tanks had been emptied, noting that authorities in the Guangxi region said that water levels in some local rivers had increased dramatically and that a student had died in floods in the city of Guilin in the south.
