Excess mortality in the last week of November in all age groups
In the fourth week of November, nearly 4,100 people died in the Netherlands. That is 1,100 more deaths than expected for this period. As in all other weeks of November, there is excess mortality. This is reported by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) on Friday.
In the whole of November, approximately 3,500 people died more than expected for this month, or a weekly excess mortality of 900. The excess mortality in October was 350 per week. Statistics Netherlands cannot say with certainty whether this excess mortality can be attributed to the corona crisis: RIVM registered 256 deaths from the corona virus in the last week of November. In the entire month of November, 912 reports of deceased people came in to the corona dashboard.
The excess mortality is visible in all age groups. In the age group of 80 years and older, almost 750 more people died in the last week of November with 2,400 deaths than expected for this period. In the age group 65-80 years 1,250 people died, an excess of 300 people. In addition, 450 people under the age of 65 died, which was 50 deaths more than expected for this age group.
Excess mortality in the month of November was visible in all provinces. The figure was particularly high in Limburg: 53 percent more people died there than expected for this month. Excess mortality was also high in November in Zeeland and Noord-Brabant (both 36 percent) and in Gelderland (39 percent).
