On Friday, the European Union launched excessive deficit procedures against seven member countries, including France. It is the first time Brussels has reprimanded EU states since the bloc suspended rules following the 2020 coronavirus pandemic and the energy crisis triggered by Russia’s war with Ukraine. In theory, countries that fail to remedy the situation can be hit with fines of 0.1% of annual gross domestic product (GDP), until action is taken to remedy the breach.
