Pay your own travel expenses to show up for work. It's the reality for some.
When driving past gas stations, the price on the signs is confronting every time. We are now used to the fact that it starts with a number '2'. Behind the decimal point it is still increasing significantly in recent months. You feel that in the wallet. Especially if travel costs are not properly arranged.
Pay your own travel expenses
If you have a decent employer, he or she will offer a travel allowance of €0.23 per kilometer. You may even think this is normal. Unfortunately, hundreds of thousands of employees in the Netherlands cannot participate in this area. They receive a lower or even no compensation for showing up to work with their private car. De Telegraaf reports on this this Saturday morning following an investigation by the CNV trade union.
For example, nothing has been agreed in the collective labor agreements for the catering industry and supermarkets about travel expenses. The boss can then simply say that you will not receive anything for the travel expenses you incur. In many other collective labor agreements, things have been arranged, but not to the maximum extent. For hospital employees, the agreement is 0.16 euro cents per km and cleaning staff have to make do with only 0.14 euro cents.
Then the petrol increase will have a severe impact. Especially if another excise tax increase is looming. It costs more and more money to show up for work. You keep having less and less left over for that hour of work.
The maximum travel allowance of 0.23 euro cents is a case of 'something is better than nothing'. The Business Drivers Association previously sounded the alarm and stated that a realistic compensation should be between 0.35 euro cents and 0.49 euro cents to cover the costs. There is little chance that that will happen. In any case, it is advisable to make clear agreements in advance with your employer about fair compensation. Paying all your own travel costs, as is currently the case in some sectors, means that the first hour of work goes towards petrol. Well great.
