“The university hospitals in Strasbourg overcame the crisis, we finally managed to attend to all the patients who asked us. We took care of covid patients and others too. But you don’t come out of a crisis like this unscathed.”
– Professor Emmanuel Andrespresident of the Medical Community of the University Hospitals of Strasbourg
For more than two years, the French debate has been dominated by the levels of infections, vaccinations and occupation of Care Units, thus making health one of the priorities of voters.
We start this Tour of France in Strasbourg, in the east of the country. At the beginning of the pandemic, the region was one of the first to experience an explosion of cases and deaths from the virus. The French often boast of their universal healthcare system, but with hospital budgets dwindling – not counting the salaries of doctors and nurses – voters are wondering if their health is really in good hands.
