First Deputy Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Dmitry Polyansky at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Tuesday, April 19, accused Western countries of using Ukraine for their own purposes.
“The concern of Western colleagues about Ukraine and Ukrainians is very opportunistic and selfish. Today they need them only as cannon fodder in a proxy war with Russia “to the last Ukrainian,” the diplomat said.
Polyansky also said that calls for a ceasefire were only meant to “give a breather” to Kiev.
“We will carefully separate such tactical pseudo-peacekeeping calls from a sincere desire to help Ukraine make the only right and long overdue decision,” he said.
Earlier, on the eve of the meeting of the Security Council, UN Secretary General António Guterres called on the parties to establish a truce from April 21 – for four days, “in connection with Holy Week, starting from Maundy Thursday and until Sunday,” when Orthodox Christians will celebrate Easter.
“Firstly, it is the safe passage of all civilians wishing to leave the areas of current and potential confrontation, in coordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross. Secondly, in addition to the ongoing humanitarian operations, the pause will ensure the safe delivery of the humanitarian aid necessary to save lives to the population in the most affected areas – Mariupol, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk,” the Secretary General said.
In addition, on April 19, the representative of the UN Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric, said that the deputy head of the world organization, Martin Griffiths, is working with Russia and Ukraine to create “humanitarian pauses.”
