Conscription|At the weekend party meeting of the coalition, an initiative on the expansion of conscription was approved.
Coalition is the Fifth party, which has decided to support the initiative to expand conscription to the entire age group, i.e. also to non-men.
In the model of the coalition, the most suitable persons, both men and women, would be selected for the service. The invitations would apply to the entire age group, but only a part of the age group would be accepted for military service.
According to the initiative taken by the coalition at the party meeting, the party therefore supports “the development of conscription and national defense in a more egalitarian direction.”
Other parties that support the expansion of conscription are Sdp, the Greens, the Left and Rkp.
Reserve Union chairman Kari Salminen says that according to a member survey conducted at the beginning of the year, well over half still supported conscription according to the current model, which is mandatory for men and voluntary for women.
“Personally, I wouldn’t make military service compulsory for people other than men,” says Salminen.
The coalition according to education of the entire age group is not a reasonable use of resources from the point of view of national defense or the national economy. Therefore, a more equal conscription would require personal choices.
In Salminen’s opinion, the choices made on the basis of suitability could take the system too much in a “salary-army-like” direction. In addition, mandatory military service for everyone would be problematic for him, for example, in terms of child care.
“On the other hand, could a woman be more suitable for the army than a man, in which case the man would be the one who stays at home”, Salminen thinks.
According to Salminen, however, there is no clear-cut solution to the matter. He considers it important to increase the number of women in the number of those who completed the service.
“Joint invitations would give a broader understanding of the health of the entire age group.”
