The death of Brazilian Michel Nisembaum, aged 59, found by the Israeli Army in the Gaza Stripis the third victim of Brazil in the current phase of the conflict that is ravaging the Middle East.
Since October 7, 2023, when the conflict began, the Brazilian government began to suggest measures on the international stage in an attempt to suspend hostilities. The first was the proposed resolution, articulated by Brazilian diplomats, presented at the UN Security Council, which called for humanitarian pauses between attacks by Israel and Hamas. But the measure ended vetoed by the United States.

“We made every possible effort to stop hostilities, to stop human sacrifices and to provide some type of assistance to local populations and Brazilians. Our concern was always humanitarian at that moment”, said Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, then president of the Security Council.
Exchange and release of hostages
When Israel and Hamas closed the hostage exchange agreement by Palestinian prisoners, still in November last year, the Brazilian government celebrated and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defended that the truce should be permanent.
“I hope that this agreement can pave the way for a political and lasting solution to this conflict and for the resumption of the peace process between Israel and Palestine,” said Lula during the G20 Virtual Summit, which marked the end of India’s presidency in block.
Brazil has also always defended, in official demonstrations, the immediate and unconditional release of hostages held by Hamas. At the end of April 2024, together with the USA and 15 other countries, he called for the Hamas releases the hostages in captivity in Gaza.
“We emphasize that the agreement on the table for the release of the hostages would allow for an immediate and prolonged ceasefire in Gaza, which would facilitate the sending of necessary additional humanitarian assistance to the entire territory and lead to an end to hostilities,” said the text signed by the Brazilian government.
Stop fire
Brazilian diplomacy has also always addressed the theme of immediate ceasefire to the international forums he participated in, in an attempt to mobilize the international community. Minister Mauro Vieira traveled to the Middle East in mid-March to, among other matters, discuss the situation of the war.
“[O ministro tratará das] prospects for establishing a ceasefire and eventual resumption of negotiations aimed at achieving lasting peace in the Middle East”, said the note from Itamaraty.
“Genocide”
Still in October 2023, President Lula began to define what happens in Gaza as “genocide”. In January 2024, the government announced support for South Africa’s effort to open a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the crime of genocide.
This Friday (24), the ICJ demanded that Israel suspend attacks in the Gaza Strip, given the lack of guarantees for the protection of civilians. Brazil has praised the Court’s measures, which seeks to minimize the damage of war.
At the beginning of the month, Israel and Hamas did not reach a truce and the current phase of the conflict continues to complete eight months on June 7th.
