Possible cause of collapse in Mallorca: load capacity on nightclub terrace may have been exceeded
The first hypothesis for the collapse of the bar suggests that the load capacity on the terrace may have been exceeded. The investigation has been started by the homicide squad, police and the city council. One of the key questions is whether the Medusa Beach Club had all the necessary permits to open.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez commented on the incident on X (formerly Twitter). He said he was closely following the aftermath of the terrible collapse. Sánchez had spoken to the Prime Minister of Mallorca, Marga Prohens, and the mayor of the city and assured the Spanish government of its support. He expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, and the first deputy mayor, Javier Bonet, visited the scene of the accident to get an idea of the situation. Up to a thousand people gathered on the street after 9 p.m. to remember the victims and watch the emergency services. The Playa de Palma was cordoned off over a large area. The beach near the scene of the accident was also inaccessible. (jm)
