Presidential candidate granted an interview to a Bahian radio station; said he was bidding farewell to the elections
The PDT candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, Ciro Gomes, again criticized the autonomy of the Central Bank. According to the pedestrian, the technical autonomy granted to the municipality in February 2021 is the result of what he classifies as “wrong economic and political governance models”.
“In this model, autonomy was given to the Central Bank. In other words, you can elect the president of Brazil, but he no longer commands the authorities. [presidente e diretores da autarquia] that say [qual será a] the interest rate [do país]”, said Ciro Gomes when being interviewed on a radio program Metropolisfrom Salvador (BA).
“When the Selic rate increases, every 1%, [de acréscimo, a União passa a ter que tirar] BRL 40 billion [dos cofres públicos] per year to deliver to the banks, in the form of interest payments”, argued.
“In Brazil, the struggle to emancipate the people has died. The business now is to anesthetize the suffering of the people with a compensatory social policy”, said Ciro Gomes, whose proposals for an eventual government foresee changes in the conduct of economic policy, such as the end of the spending cap and changes in Petrobras’ pricing policy.
Re-election
Also during the interview, Ciro Gomes said he was saying goodbye to the elections. According to the former governor of Ceará, if elected this year, he will end the possibility of reelection for the next presidential election, in 2026.
“And if I’m not elected, that’s enough for me. I’m turning 65 years old. I have devoted my entire life to this country. I have no fortune; I have no companies; I gave up three pensions; I’ve never been sued and sometimes I wonder, is it worth it? [Ver] the Brazilian population voting for corrupt people because the system is producing this in the minds of our people. It is worth it?”.
For the candidate, an eventual victory would be a “revolution”, since his candidacy runs counter to the interests of the economic and political elites. “I want to win, I’m fighting to win and I won’t give up until 5:30 pm on October 2nd”said the candidate.
Ciro also campaigned on the streets of Salvador before heading to the Sergipe capital, Aracaju, where he participated in an act this afternoon.
