Before qualifying starts, we already know that today’s result does not equal tomorrow’s starting grid. Nine drivers, including Hamilton (rear start), Verstappen (five places), Pérez (ten places) and Sainz (rear start) have grid penalties.
Q1 and Q2
The first qualifying session is particularly exciting for Nyck de Vries who drives a relatively slow Williams. He exceeds expectations in this session. Nyck not only beats his teammate, but also manages to advance to Q2. Something Latifi can’t do.
He also goes fast on his first lap in Q2, but on his second lap he makes a mistake. He therefore drives a neat thirteenth time. However, he will start even further up front tomorrow due to all the grid penalties that will be handed out.
Q3
Due to the grid penalties, all drivers already know that Leclerc will start from pole position tomorrow. Still, it is important for the other drivers to finish high in Q3. That way they can optimize their starting position.
Sainz is fastest in the first laps. Leclerc is then on P2 and Verstappen on P3. But there is still time for one last quick lap in this qualifying. Both Verstappen and Leclerc know to go faster than Sainz. Leclerc takes pole position for the Italian GP to loud cheers from the Tifosi. Verstappen will start seventh tomorrow and Sainz will start eighteenth.
