Former economy minister and finalist for the British prime minister, Rishi Sunak, criticizes the long lockdown in the UK during the coronavirus pandemic.
In an interview with Spectator magazine, Sunak highlighted that he does not intend to blame the population, but believes that a series of mistakes were made by ministers during the pandemic.
According to him, the government has not received enough information to examine the analysis produced by the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies – composed of independent experts that advise the government.
Sunak stressed that more discussions about the “offsets” of lockdowns could have made them “shorter” and “different”.
This is not the first time that Rishi Sunak has expressed concern about his own government’s handling of the pandemic. At the start of the leadership campaign, he said he flew back from California when the Omicron variant was spreading rapidly to prevent yet another UK lockdown.
This time, he goes further and denounces the government’s approach, which he says used a “fear narrative”.
The election for Boris Johnson’s replacement, a position that Sunak is contesting with the current Foreign Minister, Lizz Truss, takes place on the 5th.
